Training or PD?

Sent to our MEMO listserv from Nancy Walton from the MN DOE. Pretty good, I thought:

From the “AlphaSmart e-newsletter” for January 2006:

Does technology have the power to transform education? By itself, we'd have to say, "No." Teachers have the power to transform education. When in the hands of a gifted teacher, technology tools help students realize their potential and exceed expectations for learning. For this very reason, you may have noticed a change in educational technology terminology from training to professional development.

When teachers attend training, they learn how to enter keystrokes, click on OK buttons, set preferences, send and receive documents, and share files. When teachers attend professional development, they learn who should enter those keystrokes, when to click the OK button, which preferences encourage learning, what kinds of evidence of learning students should present as they send and receive documents, and why sharing developing knowledge is critical to learning. Training can be delivered by almost anyone who understands the technology tool, while professional development can only be delivered by a person with a unique understanding of technology, teaching, and learning….”

And people don't attend to the "how's" until they understand the "why's" as well...
