Where technology discussions need to start
Yesterday, Will Richardson tweeted:
When can we stop saying that technology a priority in schools? Curriculum is where technology discussions need to start, right?
Right, Will.
And...
Improved communications is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
Better data management and use is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
Helping special needs students is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
More effective budgeting, personnel management and record-keeping is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
A robust infrastructure that supports reliable access to applications is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
More effective teaching practices is where technology discussions need to start, right?
And...
Well, you get the idea.
Myopia is a dangerous condition when thinking about where technology discussions should start. I've not found any area of education that can't be improved with the judicious application of technology. What happens in school but outside the classroom also impacts kids.

The robust infrastructure is soooo important! I have spent the last three days on a multimedia project with 6th graders that could have been done in half the time but the computers are so old that it took forever just to copy and paste something. UGH! The teacher has to come to work early because her 6 year old laptop takes 30 minutes to boot. It makes me crazy!
Hi Dorothy,
That's a good example of why the boring stuff - the network, security, budgeting, planning - have an impact on student use. It can't all be bells and whistle high profile projects that educators talk about. We all want those great learning experiences for kids, but it takes more than simple willingness on the part of teachers - it takes support too.
Thanks for the example,
Doug
it is indeed a fact that we should accept, technology is a part and plays an important role in our lives. All around the world it has became a necessity. LIke in the system of education, a student without a computer and internet at home or on their location is finding hard to go with the flow of how their school assigns research projects for them and other school stuffs only all available on the internet in just few clicks.
