Advice to my friends in the snowy South

Lake Jefferson, LeSueur County, MN November 14, 2010

While it may not seem like it now to those of you south of the Mason-Dixon who are experiencing a little of the white stuff, take it from me, snow is good for you...

  1. It builds character.
  2. Tests your driving skills.
  3. You get back whole days of your life when school is closed.
  4. It covers all those leaves in the yard you didn't get raked this fall.
  5. Provides a good excuse to drink hot toddies.
  6. Get the sled out for cheap thrills.
  7. Shoveling provides good exercise right up to the heart attack.
  8. Forces you to slow down and smell the antifreeze.
  9. Lets you check the tracks in the snow to see what creatures visit you during the night.
  10. Did I mention, school closed?

My advice: Enjoy the snow. It may be as close to living here in Minnesota (where it is only a local call to God) as you might get.

You need to borrow a snowblower or a shovel, let me know.

Please, Georgians, get the Atlanta airport back open by Wednesday. I have to transfer there on my way to Dubai.

Thank God I hve the sense to know I am not an experienced snow driver. Ive gotten everything I might need for the next few days, ensuring I will not be out on the roads making all the experienced northern drivers swear we are crazy! Im withing a jaunt )over the hill and through the woods) to a store, so i feel very comfortable in the knowledge that I can be okay. Now just dont let the power go out, or there will be hell to pay tonight when the others around here miss that bcs football game. Sigh.

About six years ago I read that Providence had hired a superintendent from Florida and my first thought was "Oh God, he won't know how to handle snow days." Three years later he was fired in large part for getting hundreds of kids stuck on buses in the snow until 9:00 PM (and going home while it was happening).

Hi Doug,

According to our weather folks at WSB TV a moment ago, this "stuff" is going to be with us all week long - with more snow, sleet, and freezing rain in the forecast off and on all week long. I have to admire you guys that live in this kind of weather for almost six months of the year - I just couldn't do it!! (However, my grandkids are loving it!)

Have a safe flight to Dubia......My Best, Jerrie

Spoken like a true Midwesterner/Minnesotan....snow builds character. Garrison Keillor would be proud!

It's definitely been a flashback to all those Ohio winters, but without the plows, snowpants or tire chains!

And... it's pretty! At least the first 20-30 times...

We're on our second day off and it doesn't look like the temps will be up until Friday. I wouldn't hold your breath on being able to transfer through here tomorrow!

The worst thing about snow in the south?

Make-up days. We are into our 3rd day out, but there is hope. The southern sun is shining bright and warm today. Perchance a 2 hour delay tomorrow...

Home cooked meals mean lots of dishes to wash and kitchens to clean. Sigh, I want to go back to my once a dya kitchen cleaning routine that normal school days bring.

Last, cabin fever. Being stuck inside for such long periods of times is not good for the body.

Thank God we have sunshine (and melting) today. Monday promises 50+ temps and closer to normal.
