My session at ISTE: Libraries in the cloud

I've been so excited about the SIGMS Forum coming up at ISTE next week, that I almost forgot that I have my own session as well. Here's the description and a link to support materials on my wiki:

School Libraries and Cloud Computing: Roles and Possibilities

What are the advantages of moving to a "hosted" school library catalog and circulation system? How can school librarians
themselves take advantage of GoogleApps and similar cloud-based productivity tools? And what roles can the school librarian play when a school adopts a program like GoogleApps for Education?

  • Introduction (10 minutes) What is "cloud computing" and what are its advantages? What are some common examples of cloud computing in today's schools and libraries?
  • Cloud-based library applications (10 minutes) Examples of current "web-based" applications currently being used including hosted library cat/circ systems, book discussion sites, and scheduling software.
  • How librarians can use GoogleApps for Education (10 minutes) Concrete examples and templates of how librarians use GoogleApps to administer their programs.
  • Examining the role of the librarian in a district-wide implementation of GoogleApps for Education (15 minutes) Seven things librarians have done in the Mankato Schools to help assure a successful roll out of Apps for all staff and students.
  • Discussion and ideas (10 minutes)

I recognize that lots of great sessions are always offered concurrently so I am always pleased and flattered when anybody shows up for one of my talks.

Oh, it's Tuesday at 2PM.

Hope to see folks around the Edu-blogger event as well. Looking forward to Philly!

Hi Doug,
I'm bummed that I won't be at ISTE this year. I would love to hear your session. I have to say that I love the cloud and it was a real life saver for me when I ditched our server based online library system (circ cat) for Follett Destiny hosted. My school's very small tech department loves it too because they have one less server to deal with.

Thanks for the confirmation, Nancy. (May I use your comment in my presentation?) Our Follett is hosted as well and it works out well for us for the very reasons you mention.

We are a small public school in Illinois k-8 and our hosted sirsidynix decision was one of the best ones I did since automating in the first place back 1990. Cloud based tools and google apps in particular are a big part of what we do and gaining speed. Wish I could be at your session. Follow you on twitter so I'll look for links.
