A week to reflect, write, and relax

As long-time readers know, I sometimes take a few days of vacation to a nice warm area to escape the sub-zero temps of Minnesota and let my tech team take a little break from me. (See My writing process, etc.) They nearly always include a working area that looks like this except not sideways:

and is never far from a place like this but not upside down:

I've come back for the 4th time to the Dominican Republic. North coast this time near Cabarete. I like the warm temps, friendly people, cheap accommodations, good food, and resistible cultural, historical, and natural attractions. I usually leave the resort only for my daily walks.

This week looks to be a little more relaxing than past trips. No book contract due, just a self-imposed task to add a Volume Two to my little book, Machines are the Easy Part; People are the Hard Part. (A free download from Hulu.)

Like the first volume, the second will be a collection of observations and insights I have gained from working in education for 40 years -  especially with technology and libraries. A large part of my time here will be spent re-reading the Blue Skunk blog and culling ideas that seem to have legs. I am one of those obviously deranged people enjoys reading his own writing and, even worse, finding it amusing. This is a labor of love. No publication deadline set for what will be a free download sometime later this year.

And I will nap, walk, drink beer, and read at least 3 books of no redeeming value.

Everyone needs time to recharge and I worry about those strivers who cannot or do not choose to get away from work, everyday life, and cold weather. When I get home I hope those with whom I both work and socialize will find me a bit more mellow. And find myself a bit easier to live with as well. Try it someday.

I look forward to Volume 2 with great anticipation! Here in Lake Placid (NY), we have to wait until April to take our break from the cold----but of course, it's still cold in April in the Adirondacks (unfortunately). Enjoy your time off and best wishes! (I'm going to keep the Dominican Republic in mind as a vacation destination.)
