The map of missing libraries and librarians

This is really interesting:

A Nation without School Librarians

This map marks the cities, towns, communities, and states that have made the decision to either eliminate certified school library positions (indicated in blue) or require one school librarian to work with two (2) or more school library programs throughout the week (indicated in red).

Although hundreds of studies show the impact that School Librarians have on student achievement, these school districts believe otherwise.

Let's compare the student achievement scores without a school librarian in a year or so to discover what thousands of library supporters already knew.

School Librarians DO make a difference!

Shonda, thanks for your good work.

And Blue Skunk readers, can you help keep this accurate?

Last year, I interviewed in Owatonna Minnesota. They have several schools, but have chosen to have one media specialist to run about three libraries. Redwood Falls, MN has one media specialist for two libraries. Foley has no media specialist in their elementary school, but hired a "technology integration specialist", Onamia has also chosen this route, as has several other schools. Watch the openings. It is very interesting.

After 35 years in my school district (the last 17 as a librarian), I'm retiring in a few weeks. I'm not being replaced. Neither is a second librarian in one of our elementary schools. The two remaining librarians will cover four buildings for the foreseeable future. I'm not going gentle into that good night. But I'm going.

San Mateo Union High School District has had 3 librarians covering 6 schools for the past 3 years. When I realized I hadn't been called as a substitute (they use clerks when the librarian isn't on campus) for 2 years I decided that I would completely retire!!
