This week's Back Story in Newsweek

I can't find this online so I am just pasting a part of the scanned page (yes, I still subscribe to print magazines - don't hold it against me). It's worth finding the the whole page. Hint - check your library.

Look at the number of books published!! Who says libraries are doomed? I assume that number includes ebooks. If libraries don't get going strong with loaning ebooks - we might be in trouble. I attended a workshop this week aimed mostly at classroom teachers. Many are very enthusiastic Kindle/ereader fans. Agog over the array of books offered via Amazon et al. And SO much cheaper than book stores!! Well - how about free folks? They had NO idea that they could borrow ebooks from their public library. Libraries are not doing a very good job of getting the word out I am afraid.

Doug - As I was cleaning out my reader, I went from your feed to Stephen's Lighthouse. Imagine my dismay as I saw your exact picture posted with no citation and no explanation. Stephen's readers will not even be aware that this was not the full graphic.

I was very disheartened to see this as I was already lamenting his lack of citation when trying to track down the sources of some social media graphics he included on his blog. As a leading library professional, I expected more. It just goes to show that some people do not practice what they preach.

The graphic has been updated on Stephen's Lighthouse to include the full graphic and the citation. I'm unclear as to what changed and when with the post. I appreciate the full citation and graphic available there.

Hi Jacquie,

I was surprised by the number of books as well!

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Sara,

Hmmmm, maybe Stephen saw your comment!
