Creed of the Sociopathic Obsessive Compulsive
Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 08:22AM
I posted this once beforre and had a hard time finding it, so I am re-posting. One last NECC observation - the people I tend to respect the most are all Sociopathic Obsessive Compulsives. Sorry, but you know the shoe fits.
Peter's Laws (The Creed of the Sociopathic Obsessive Compulsive)
- If anything can go wrong, fix it! (To hell with Murphy!)
- When given a choice, take both.
- Multiple projects lead to multiple successes.
- Start at the top and work your way up.
- Do it by the book... but be the author.
- When forced to compromise, ask for more.
- If you can't beat them, join them, and then beat them.
- If it's worth doing, it's got to be done now!
- If you can't win, change the rules.
- If you can't change the rules, then ignore them.
- Perfection is not optional.
- When faced without a challenge, make one.
- "No" simply means begin again at one level higher.
- Don't walk when you can run.
- Bureaucracy is a challenge to be conquered with a righteous attitude, a tolerance for stupidity, and a bulldozer when necessary.
- When in doubt, THINK!
- Patience is a virtue, but persistence to the point of success is a blessing.
- The squeaky wheel gets replaced.
- The faster you move, the slower time passes, the longer you live!

Doug, I love these. I shared them with my team, and then sent them to another team I work with.

Great! They are not original with me, but I don't know who the original "Peter" was.
Missed you at NECC!
Doug
my uncle has this creed on his wall. its so big that you can stay a mile and see it. he is one of you.
Hi Kimone,
Obviously your uncle is a very wise man!
I have an old poster of this as well on my office wall.
All the best,
Doug
The original Peter is Peter Diamandis, the man with the civilian space flight mission. He definitely lives by these laws.
Hi Taylor,
Very nice to know. Thanks!
Doug
Actually I have seen it attributed to Dr. Peter Safar, the father of resuscitation.
Oh yes, the version I have has 22 laws.
here are the final ones:
20. Death is not the enemy but occasionally needs help with timing
21. When on thin ice, dance
22. It's up to us to save the world
Thanks, Croaker, for this info and for the additional rules as well.
All the best,
Doug
Croaker and Doug: The original Peter was not Peter Safar. The PeterĀ“s Laws were given to Peter Safar, because they fitted so well. The were then extended by law 20-22. I seem to have misplaced the copy Peter Safar gave to me, but I think No 20 is a quote by or is jokingly attributed to Peter de Winter (?), No 21 by/to John Snyder (?) and 22 (here I am sure) Safar himself. best wishes Philip
I should have looked this up before: here are all the facts: http://www.uchsc.edu/anes/research/tpnlaws.php

This is awesome and the frosting on the awesome cake is that I got here via a facebook post by a high school student :)
Many years ago, my husband bought me the creed on a large poster ... but being the S.O.C. that I am, I immediately retyped it to delete the one rule I didn't like, and framed it so it's visible while I'm at my desk. Thanks so much for making it available online!
Hi Janet,
Glad you found it. I have that big poster on my office door - clearly visible at all times.
Out of curiosity, what law did you not like?
Doug
At the Science Museum in Chicago they have this creed posted except they have a #20 which says: The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself!
