Returning to the rubrics

Nearly a year ago (gulp!), I began revising my CODE77 Beginning Rubrics, last updated in 2002. I got the first six done and then went ADD on the effort:

Rubric 1: Basic Computer Operation

Rubric 2: File Management

Rubric 3: Time Management and Organization

Rubric 4: Word Processing

Rubric 5: Spreadsheets

Rubric 6: Database Use

Since i'll be using these in a workshop in Wisconsin this Wednesday, it's time to finish them up. Blue Skunk readers, your comments as I revise will be most welcome as I examine...

Rubric 7: Graphics and Digital Image Use

Rubric 8: Hypermedia/Presentation Software Use

Rubric 9: Network and Internet Use

Rubric 10: Student Assessment

Rubric 11: Ethical Use Understanding

I'll look at the evolution of each of these in a separate entry and then compile the (now) 2009 version into a single document.

Please remember that the purpose of these rubrics is only for teachers to assess their basic level of technology use for professional productivity. Rubrics for Retructuring (which also need some updating) address more sophisticated educational uses of technology.

Here we go!

Doug, Have you seen Andrew Churches' Digital Taxonomy? He's created rubrics for all the Web 2.0 tools blogging, wikis, video etc. You might take a look and save yourself a lot of work. We used his blogging rubric and the quality of the posts improved dramatically.

Nancy beat me to it. I was going to suggest web 2.0 tools. I would venture a guess that MANY teachers don't know what they are - or that they have any use in the classroom. In my case, precious few web 2.0 tools are permitted by our ever-vigilant content filter. Still - not all districts are as limited as we are. Teachers who don't become proficient with these skills will be left behind big time.

Also - Joyce Valenza has some very useful materials about improving presentations.

Hi Nancy,

A very interesting approach by Church! (A little too much depth, I think, for most of the people with who I work.) It’s a reminder that I need to update my Internet Rubrics <http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/rubrics-for-teacher-internet-use.html> to incorporate Web 2.0 tools though!

Thanks!

Doug

Hi Jacquie,

Web 2.0 tools are in the revision a bit. I do think I will be tackling my Internet rubrics next – which will really need to address them.

I’ve been enjoying Joyce’s comments on presentation suggestions too. I am may not quite so zen!

Thanks for the comment,

Doug
